Installation & Photography, 2025
Commissioned by The 14th Taipei Biennial

The project is a rock garden installation with photographic works exploring the multi meanings and transitions of identity. Artificial rock gardens have significant meaning in Qing Dynasty. Since the 17th century, Taiwanese ancestors who left southern China, longing for their homeland, have recreated Chinese-style gardens in their new environment. These gardens became a way to hold onto memory and identity. Over time, they have developed into a mix of feelings and emotions. While for modern Taiwanese who no longer feel connected to China, the gardens may be seen as simply something beautiful to look at. Through empty shots and film-subtitle-like self-questioning, I waver between the anarchic ideal of utopia and the voices of reality, presenting a state of complexity and ambiguity.
